Stoneware,smear oval
Question:
I have recently purchased a jug (online) from a Billings, Montana auction. I couldn’t personally look over the jug before bidding and had to go by a single, slightly out of focus picture. But what I saw in the picture intrigued me — a brown topped Red Wing jug with a wing and oval! When I rec’d the jug, two things sent up red flags to me. The color of the wing is a much deeper red than is commonly seen, however I have seen a rare 1 gallon lid before with a similar colored wing, and I feel that was a ‘good’ lid. ( Not too many lids out there with wings stamped on them). The other thing that looks suspect with this jug is the oval – it is smaller than I have ever seen (1-1/8" across).. it is a Union Stoneware Co. oval. The way the ink was applied for the oval looks suspect also, but I don’t know. Have you ever seen markings like this before? Can you offer any advise for me… I kinda think I am out $325 on my risky purchase. Regards, Tim Mikita

10 gallon Red Wing Crock with handles
Question:
We were hoping you could help us. My wife and I have an older RedWing crock that is no longer shown on the Red Wing website and I was wondering if you could tell me anything about it, particularly it’s value. It is bail handled, 16" tall and 15" in diameter. It has a large "10" on the side, up near the rim. The logo is stamped in blue in an oval layout and reads: Red Wing Union Stoneware Co. ——– Red Wing, Minn It also has stamped in blue ink "Patented, Dec 21, 1944" (not sure of the last 4 – it is hard to read). It is in good shape, without chips or cracks. Thank you!

Red Wing #9 Mixing Bowl, why the beveled cut outs?
Question:
I have a #9 mixing bowl. It’s whitish colored with 2 blue bands around the top. I know it’s redwing, I’ve seen many around and actually have 5 different sizes of this "pattern". But my question is about the #9 bowl. On the bottom area of the rim there is beveled-like cut outs. All the #9′s I’ve seen have this cut area, but no one can tell me why….. please help me with this frustrating question!!
