Red Wing ashtray- hobby shop piece

Question:
I have a redwing ashtray shaped like a wing that is white or ivoey with gold swirled everywhere.. MOstly gold just some white shining through. sides are completely white no gold. bottom is not glazed and reads:red wing potteries U.S.A. and has 273 penciled next to USA. Can you please give me some insight on date of manufacture and value.. Thanks alot. K.p.I can send a pic if needed. McKinney

Answer: got the pics, thank you

the wing ashtray was made around 1953. Looking at the pics, I think this one was done after red wing closed, the glaze just doesn’t look right. molds were sold after the factory closed, we call them "hobby shop" pieces. So it wasn’t glazed at Red Wing. this one will probably be worth around 25.00 or so. thanks, steve n rose

Answer: Hi Jill

this is a hobby shop item, done after Red Wing closed, in 1967. Molds were sold or remade by hobby stores, and glazed by other’s, this is probably glazed by your Grandmother, with the date and initials. The original shape was part of the Bronze line, from 1965. hope this helps, thanks, steve n rose
