I need help with a book I think has misinformation. Have you seen the Collectors Encyclopedia of salt glazed stoneware? This book has no salt glazed pieces that I , or any other potter friends can discern. I have written the publishers and they said no one has ever tried to point this out. This book is being used as a reference for prices on online auctions. The book also describes the stoneware as press molded, and it has all been poured or jiggered. I need to find out why a book like this can spread so much misinformation. A reply would be very much appreciated. I have come to this opinion after twenty five years producing salt glazed ware. I have a butter churn with a blue #4 inside a heart. I saw a similar crock on ebay that was listed as Red Wing. Did Red Wing ever use a mark like that? Or do you know the maker of my crock? I would apreciate any input. Thank you! Barbara

Question:
Hello! I just picked up this (almost) exact crock at an antique store. (I found this photo online when I got home). The markings are identical except I think the wing on mine is smaller than this photo; mine is 4" across, and the oval is about 2 1/4". I’m thinking this means it was made more towards the 1936 end rather than the 1906 end of "Red Wing Union Stoneware Co." Also the red of the red wing seems to have eaten its way through the glaze and it looks sort of bubbled up and chippy in parts. Hope it’s not glowing!! :) But the coolest part (I think) is, the crock I have also has a lid. The lid has a handle in the center of a 10 petal flower embossed in the clay and it also has a number"2" on one of the petals. I’ve never seen a lid before so I grabbed it! The lid has two pretty big chips but otherwise is in one piece. I happily paid $45 for this crock, and I suspect I made out pretty well! What would you say it is worth? Thank you! Hi,I have a #2 lb butter crock (3 5/8ths tall by 5 5/8ths wide)with a logo stating – THE GOLDEN RULE – INCORPORATED – GENERAL MERCHANDISE – PHONE 94 – EUREKA , S.D. It’s in great condition . I’ve had it about 20 years and have not found another one with the same advertising or anyone else who has ever seen one like it. In researching the store, it could possibly be connected to J.C. Penney before it’s name change in 1913. I actually have come up with some names of owners and partners of the store. Just wondering if there are any other pieces out there or anything new I can learn about it. Thanks

Question:
Hello I have a question about Red Wing hot water bottles. I have what I thought were 2 of the same water bottle but recently when I looked at them side by side I noticed that they are different. One is a little larger and seems to be the same on all 3 sides. The other one is a little smaller and a little lighter color and seems to have one side that is much flatter than the other 2. Are these both Red Wing? Is there another company that made these? I had thought about selling one of them but do not want to until I know if it is Red Wing or not. Dan, the Red Wing Stoneware Company manufactured salt glaze crocks between 1887 & 1894.  In the larger salt glaze crocks, the butterfly is the most common decoration produced by Red Wing.  Because of its beauty the Red Wing butterfly are always sought after by the salt glaze collectors.  With yours being mint or close to mint, and side stamped to boot (20% or less of these large crocks are found stamped) the value will be in the range of $2500 to $3000.  Al Kohlman

I have a stoneware butter mold with no markings in a dull yellow color. Approximately one pound of butter would fit inside.  It has a cluster of grapes for the design in the bottom. I do not have a picture of it. Is this Red Wing?  Do you know what it might be if not Red Wing? Melanie
