Red Wing Sewer Pipe Vase

Question:
We have a large piece of sewerpipe pottery, which is an umbrella stand. We’ve heard employees of Red Wing would make items on their lunch hour. Can you identify & give us a value. It measures 25.5" tall & 9.5 across. It is not hand thrown. No signature that we could find. The decoration seems to be applied with a compass & scratched in. Thanks Joan

Answer: Hi Joan

without a mark, it’s really hard to identify. There were several sewer pipe companies. It’s still a nice piece of folkart, I would value it around 3-350.00. thanks, steve n rose

Salt Glaze vase with blue decoration

Question:
Hi. These may or may not be Redwing items. If not, please direct me to someone that can help identify them, if possible. More photos here: http://s256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/NewWestCollectibles/2%20Pots/ Purchased these 2 pots at an estate sale in Los angelels area this week. Both pots have the same mark on bottom. They are of a grayish-brown finish, with sort of navy blue accents. Larger one is 18" tall by 7" diameter across the top and is in the shape of a butter churn (or umbrella stand). Circled by 3 odd smiling fish designs with very tall, stylized dorsal fins. 5 blue stripes circle at bottom, 4 more at top, 2 of which have a white stripe in between them. Smaller pot approx. 11" tall, Approx. 4" diameter across bottom, spreading out to approx 8" in a bulge shape about 2/3 of the way up. 2 blue stripes circle near bottom with a row of tear drop shapes directly above them. 2 more blue stripes circle the bulging portion. Diameter at mouth is only 2 & 3/4". Mark on bottoms is identical, appears to have been done with a tool while clay was still wet. Appears to be Chinese or Japanese (see photos). Does anyone know maker, region of origin and approx. age of these ? Any help in identifying these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Kind regards, ~ Tim Robbins

Answer: Hi Tim

they appear to be contemporary Oriental art, but other than that, I can’t be of much help. thanks, steve n rose

Red Wing 977 console bowl

Question:
Red wing stamp below is number 977. Size: 4.5inches high x 10"wide at the top. When was this manufactured? What is its correct name, besides bowl? The finish is a satin and not high gloss. Inside at the bottom of the bowl are 2 tiny pinpoint factory flaws. There is another pinpoint flaw on the outside. On one side there are a few golden brown speckle-spatters under the glaze. Underneath, the bottom rim that the piece sits on: in the middle of that rim is a 1 inch crack. You can tell it came out of the kiln like that. The crack appears to be about 1/32 inch deep. Do these flaws make it worthless or worth very little? Marti

Answer: Hi Marti

your bowl is from around 1947, it came in 3 sizes, this being the largest. It’s a console bowl of sorts. Your flaws sound like something that would come out of the factory. I haven’t seen too many with the crack, but it could be. Value is around 35.00. thanks, steve n rose
