Question:
Hi there, I have this red clay crock with brown slip glaze inside and half way down on the outside. It came from a antique shop in the middle of nowhere in the Stearns County, MN area 30 years ago. I`m wondering if it could be a John Paul or a Philleo & Williams piece. I haven`t been able to find much information on those potteries. The piece is thick walled and heavy. there is a incised line about 4 inches down and the handles are similar to red wing handles. The pottery seems hard, not has soft has most redware I have. It stands 12 inches tall. It also has a slight ovoid shape which I would guess would put at being made around the 1860`s or so. There are no gallon marks on it. There is a lot of water glass residue on it, which appears somebody used for preserving a lot of eggs. Can you tell me any thing about it? I can email more pictures if you need them. Thanks Tom

3 gallon beehive pot with the 3 and the lazy 8 design, Salt Glaze
Question:
I believe this is a 3 gallon beehive pot with the 3 and the lazy 8 design. I cannot find a redwing seal anywhere on the jug. There are no chips and it is in god condition. I have included a picture of the handle. Is there any other way to determine if it is a Redwing? What do you think is the value the piece? Thanks so much for your help. Christine

10, 15, 20 gallon large wing, Red Wing Stoneware Crocks
Question:
I have 3 crocks 10, 15, and 20. All are in good condition with no chips. All three have the redwing seal, wing décor and the number. The 20 no longer has the handles and the other two never had handles. The 20 also has “Patent Applied For” stamped above where the handle should be hung from. I was wondering the approximate year and value of the crocks. The redwing seal on all three are identical. They were found in a shed on the 100 year old family farm in central Wisconsin and we are unsure when or where they were purchased. Thank you for your time. Chris

2 gallon birch leaf crock, no oval
Question:
Hi. I recently bought this crock off of Craigslist. I’ve seen other appraisals for similar crocks, but never without the oval marking below the leaves. Could you tell me approximate time period, rarity, and possible value? There is a shallow chip on the bottom surface which shows about 1/4" deep when sitting. Thanks!

Blue Band Jug with Los Angeles Wine Co advertising
Question:
I’m sure this 1/2 gal. jug is Red Wing due to the distinctive design, the blue bands, and the exact match between the advertising on my jug and that on the one on page 38 of Depasquale, Peck, and Peterson’s 1985 book RED WING COLLECTIBLES. The bottom isn’t marked, though. Jug dimensions are 8 1/4" tall x 5 7/8" bottom diameter. My questions are: –are other 1/2 gal. examples like this known? –is the lack of bottom marking a significant issue for rarity or value? –given the condition (one shallow flake off the right-angle shoulder, 4 "nibbles" off the heel, and a half-dozen minor in-making flaws visible on the body–in short, nothing that significantly detracts from displayability), what would you say this piece is worth, approximately? Many thanks in advance for your help with this, your "Ask the Experts" service is a real kindness to us "Jacks of all trades"! Thanks Richard

Matching Pair of brown urns
Question:
Hello. I recently purchased these two pieces from a thrift store and paid $1.98 per piece. They are 8" tall. One has a green/blue ‘splatter’ underneath the glaze and they both have ‘turkey droppings’. Would these be considered olive jars? Any chance they are Red Wing? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time! Reid
