2 lb butter crock

Question:
Hi,I have a #2 lb butter crock (3 5/8ths tall by 5 5/8ths wide)with a logo stating – THE GOLDEN RULE – INCORPORATED – GENERAL MERCHANDISE – PHONE 94 – EUREKA , S.D. It’s in great condition . I’ve had it about 20 years and have not found another one with the same advertising or anyone else who has ever seen one like it. In researching the store, it could possibly be connected to J.C. Penney before it’s name change in 1913. I actually have come up with some names of owners and partners of the store. Just wondering if there are any other pieces out there or anything new I can learn about it. Thanks

Red Wing Hot Water Bottles

Question:
Hello I have a question about Red Wing hot water bottles. I have what I thought were 2 of the same water bottle but recently when I looked at them side by side I noticed that they are different. One is a little larger and seems to be the same on all 3 sides. The other one is a little smaller and a little lighter color and seems to have one side that is much flatter than the other 2. Are these both Red Wing? Is there another company that made these? I had thought about selling one of them but do not want to until I know if it is Red Wing or not. I am enclosing a picture of the 2 side by side, hopefully someone can help me figure this out. Thank you in advance for all your help.

Crackle Torquoise Vase

Question:  {mosimage}
Hi Red Wing Collectors, This vase was passed to me from my grandmother. From my research, I believe it is from the Crackle Turquoise designs by Murphy. Yes? Approximately what year would it be from and what is it’s value? It’s been loved and held many flowers over the years, although there are no cracks or chips. Thanks! Elizabeth

Answer:  {mosimage}
You are most likely correct that the glaze is crackle turquoise with a bronze interior, however I can not confirm the designer was Charles Murphy.  There are 3 other similarly designed bowls and vases.   Production of the piece started around 1947, which is a timeframe where both Charles Murphy and Belle Kogan produced original designs for Red Wing.  The approximate value is $20-$30. Vase #1175

Question:
I have located a vase with a standing woman in the center in a turquoise dress holding a flower.  On either side of the woman are two tall brown round columns that are open (to hold flowers I assume) the total height is approximately 14" and the width is about 10" on an oval base.The piece is marked Redwing.  It appears to be a Charles Murphy Englobe turquoise figure but I do not seem to find one that is the same shape.  I got it at an estate sale and am trying to locate a value. Christine

Answer:
You are correct that the item you have is one of the engobe pieces that is attributed to Charles Murphy as the designer.  Your vase is number 1175 and as an estimated value of $300-$400, depending on condition. SteveNRose

Midnight Rose Pitcher

Question:  {mosimage}
Hello, Could you please tell me how old this pitcher is and the value?  It measures 5.5" from the tip of the spout to the base.  The interior is ivory.  There are two small dots…punch holes at the top of the handle. The bottom has Redwing USA, with no number.  Thanks for your assistance! Mike

Answer:
Mike,
You have a creamer in the Midnight Rose pattern.  This pattern was part of the Anniversary line, so named because the line was introduced in 1953 — the year of Red Wing Potteries’ 75th anniversary in business.  My earliest brochure for Midnight Rose is dated January 1954 but I believe the pattern was introduced a year earlier with the other Anniversary patterns.  Midnight Rose did not sell as well as the other Anniversary patterns and was discontinued January 1956.

Because Midnight Rose was dropped rather quickly it is more difficult to find today.  A black Midnight Rose creamer in excellent condition is worth around $25.
