Question:
This question is in regards to a stoneware piece I bought for a dollar at an auction in southwestern Pennsylvania. I don’t know much about stoneware so I’ll describe it to the best of my ability. It is a greyish-tan color bowl(looks like natural stone) with a clear glaze over it. It also has splotches of colored glaze on it which is raised up slightly higher than the body of the bowl. It has a small lip that goes around the top. It is about 4" tall by 6" across. On the base there is a small indented 1/2" square mark that is off centered. In the indented square is what looks to me like either a small face wearing a mask or a Chinese symbol. The marking is VERY hard to make out. I would like to know more about this piece. I have been researching it non-stop and cant find anything about it! Thank you! Kathleen
Answer: Hi Kathleen
I’m not familiar with this type of pottery, wish we could be of more help. thanks, steve n rose

could you send another pic of the bottom/ I’m having a hard time seeing this one. Most Van Briggle pieces have the arched window mark, with van briggle, and colo springs, where their factory is. thanks, steve n rose
Question:
Hello – this little stoneware bowl measures 3 1/2 across top and 3 3/8" tall. I don’t see any marks on it other then the advertising inside. Light crazing on the glossy glaze, no nicks/chips anywhere. There’s some light drip shaped (stray glaze?) staining on the inside near the top, and a faint diagonal line on the inside, I’m being very fussy here. No lid. Just wondering if this is a Red Wing piece, I’m guessing it’s a sugar bowl, and it’s approx. value. Thanks, Jeff

Question:
I am looking to determine the value of a 5 gallon red wing stoneware crock which I would like to sell. The words "Red Wing Union Stoneware Company, Red Wing, Minnesota" are imprinted at the lower part of the crock. The patent date below one handle is December 21, 1915. The stoneware does have some pitting and the red color of the wing appears to be somewhat faded but the crock has no cracks or broken areas.. The handles are black and appear to be the original handles. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Marilyn
