Lotus Dinnerware

Question:
I have just come across an almost complete set of Lotus Dinner Ware which was hand painted in 1952. I have twelve dinner plates, salad plates,B. and B. plates, coffee cups and saucers as well as a sugar bowl, creamer, vegetable dish, gravy boat and chop plate. How can I find out how much this set is worth now? I have the old Red Wing price list with the set when dinner plates were $1.75 each.

Answer:  The items listed comprise a very nice set of basic Lotus serving pieces, but this is definitely not an "almost complete set".  It does not include valuable accessory pieces such as the teapot, water pitcher, covered beverage server, egg plate, supper trays, butter dish, salt & pepper, relish, casserole, etc.

Lotus flatware is hand painted, but the exteriors of Lotus hollowware (creamer, cups, etc) were available in three colors: Metallic brown, chartreuse, or gray.  The color of your items would influence interest from potential buyers and thus could be a factor in the value.  Metallic brown is the most common color; gray the the least common.

Retail value for your set would be in the range of $300 to $400.  This assumes all pieces are in excellent condition.  Chips, cracks, flakes, hairlines, stains, etc will reduce the value considerably.

You also mentioned an "old Red Wing price list".  Most likely this is a Lotus sales brochure.  Vintage Red Wing prices lists and sales brochures are of great interest to collectors.  A Lotus brochure from the early 1950s would be worth $25 or more in good condition.

Bob White Collection

Question:
Hello, Red Wing Experts! We recently rented a friend’s Aunt Agnes’ cottage in Redgranite WI and were delighted to find it stocked with a nearly full set of Bob White dinnerware. I trembled every time we washed the dishes, worried that we’d chip something…or worse yet shatter a piece. (Next time, I’ll take our own dishes and just admire the Red Wings.) In any event, I’d love to be able to tell Agnes what her fabulous collection might be worth. Would you please provide an estimated value for the following Bob Whites, all in excellent shape: 7 dinner plates (one with a small chip) 8 mid-size plates 6 cups/saucers Oblong bowl with "handles" Salt/pepper shakers Appetizer bird (spots for toothpicks with olives or cheese) 4 rectangular appetizer/sandwich (?) plates Pitcher (I believe there were more pieces in the hutch, but I can’t remember what they were) Thanks! – Cathy B. P.S. Sorry, no photos.

Question:
Hello, I have acquired 7 Red Wing dishes recently and looked them up in Warman’s red wing pottery book from our local library. They are all "sectioned plates, palette form, from the Patio Supper Service Provincial Luncheonware, 1951, 13" wide, impressed mark Red Wing USA." Just wondering what else you could tell me about them, current prices they are going for, etc.. Colors are eggplant, chartreuse, peach, dark green. 6 of them are in perfect condition, 1 has a chip. Thanks for your help. Suzy

Wreath Pattern

Question:
Hello – Lucky me – Today I acquired a covered casserole and charger in what turns out to be the WREATH pattern. It’s unmarked. Found the pattern in my RW Stoneware guide. It matches the plate that’s listed, but no other pieces are shown. It’s a light green color with some of the bisque showing through, like the glaze is washed on. The charger measures 10" and is MINT. The casserole dish measures 8" diameter, 3 1/2" tall and is mint except for some silver scratching on the inside. The lid is 8 1/4" diameter and has two hairlines, one near the knob, the other on the edge. It also has a good deal of crazing. What can you tell me about this piece(s)? Years of production, value, and if possible, how popular was this line? It’s beautiful and I only paid $3.00!
