2 gallon birch leaf crock

Question:
Hi, I became interested in red wing a couple of months ago and since then have been reading a lot of info and keeping my eyes open for good deals. I picked this piece up because I liked the birch leaves. After doing some research I found that the "ski" oval was put into use about 1909 and that the "red wing" logo also began to be used about the same time. Since this crock has the birch leaves and the ski oval, would it be safe to say that this piece was made in or around 1909? Would this make it a transitional piece? What might the value be of this crock? Thank you, Warren

Sponge bucket with wire handle

Question:
Hi- My mom recently passed away and left a nice collection of stoneware. She has two dark blue sponge ware design type covered jars, each with a wire handle. They are approx. 6-7" tall (I did not measure them while I was there, sorry) and there is no Red Wing marking. I was told that these are indeed Red Wing refrigerator jars, these pieces were not marked during production and they are rare. Any thoughts? Thanks Pat

Red Wing 179 green pitcher

Question:
I bought a piece of Redwing art pottery several years ago at a local auction. It is a fat, green pitcher with crude, simple flowers on it and the number 179 pressed into the bottom. Would you tell me when it was made, how much it is worth and anything else you know about it? Thank you. Hugh Ben

Answer: Hello

Your pitcher is part of the early glazedware line, from the late 20′s-early 30′s. Value is around 85.00. thanks, steve n rose

Matte Black oval shape

Question:
I picked up a lovely piece of Red Wing Pottery – clearly marked on the bottom. It is a mat black color. It is oval, about 12" x 6" x 3" high. It has an undulating rim made up of four curled lips, three curling in and one curling out. The guy at the store only knew it was Red Wing and that someone told him it had something to do with handkerchiefs. A handkerchief bowl? A handkerchief vase? To me it looks Art Nouveau… can you help identify it? Thanks in advance! JIm

Answer: Hi Jim

this glaze dates to the late 50′s, and I’, sure it’s a Murphy design, he did lots of the amorphic shapes. Not sure about the handkerchief story, it’s just a console bowl. Value is around 25.00 or so. thanks, steve n rose

5 gallon elephant ear, Union Stoneware Co crock

Question:
I am dissolving my Mom’s estate after she passed away and from the little research I have done, I have (2) fairly rare, really good condtion crocks I would like any information on and approximate values on. I am going to submit 2 inquiries, this being the first. –The first crock may possibly be a "Double Birch" 5 Gallon Crock, its marked in blue with the "Union Oval" The top line reads "Union" the middle, "STONEWARE CO." and the third line "RED WING MINN". There is a hairline fracture in it, and the rim has no chips, but a couple dark "dropping" of darker hardened clay. We found this buried the crawlspace under our VERY old home. Any information, as soon as possisble include approx value would be great. Thank you I will submit the other crock I have next. -Matthew

3 gallon Minnesota Stoneware Crock cleaning advice

Question:
Hi, I recently acquired a Minnesota Stoneware Co. 3 gallon salt glaze crock lid. It is in excellent condition (no chips, cracks, repairs), however, it is somewhat dirty around the unglazed ring and the outer lip. No rust or mineral stains, just lightly dirty. What can I safely use to clean this? I know that bleach is bad for stoneware. How about soap? Bob
