George Ohr piece?

Question:
This is a large thrown? rose fire glazed pot that I’m trying to find who could have made it. One of the prospects was, or is, George Ohr because of the glaze and other aspects of the piece. Thought I’d ask the experts to get their opinion on this piece. One of the aspects is how it was made, the clay looks whitish gray, the base is well defined and it is thin walled. Mario

Answer: Hi Mario

I’m not an Ohr expert, but most all his pieces were marked, altho I do agree it is a bit on the bizarre side… I’m not sure who made it. wish we could be of more help. thanks, steve n rose

Badger on a football

Question:
I have a small (3 inches by 2 and 1/2 inches at the base and about 2 and 3/4 inches in height) piece that is a badger standing behind a football with its front paws about half way up the ball and standing on it’s hind legs. It is brown in color and has a very shiny glaze. On the bottom, stamped into the pottery, is "R. W POTTERIES" around the top of the "hole". Under the "hole" it says "RED WING MINN". On each side of the "hole", looking at it so it can be read, is a "c" with a circle around it on the left and 1939 on the right of the "hole" separating the two "inscriptions". The base itself looks like the ball and the badger are on grass. The webbing on the ball is about three-quarters up and the ball itself is on its side and tilted slightly from left to right as you look at the piece from the front – that is with the badger behind the ball and looking up over the ball toward the sky. To me it is in great condition – looks like new but I make no claim to knowing anything about that! Thanks for any help!!! John

Answer: Hi John

these are part of the Minnesota/Michigan football rivalry. The value is around 200.00 or so. thanks, steve n rose

Red Wing USA 1151, deisgned by charles murphy

Question:
I am curious about the provenenance of a piece of Red Wing pottery inherited after my mother-in-law passed away. It appears to be a vase, approximately 9 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches in diameter. On opposing sides there are two "handles" that resemble two connected half circles (the upper larger than the lower, with one set near the top and the opposing set nearer the bottom. The top of the vase in flanged inward, while the bottom is flanged inward toward a "base" of three rings. On one side is a large decorative motif of a stylized native american or egyptian woman in silhouette, a deer with spots, and a horizontal olive(?) branch. The backside of the vase is decorated by a vertical olive branch. The bottom of the vase is imprinted "Red Wing USA 1151" with the leg of the "R" extending under both words. The glaze color is a light olive color, and the condition is excellent. I am most interested in the pattern, history and any other information on this, and only secondarily interested in the value, because of the sentimental value. Mark

Answer: Hi Mark

this is a design by charles murphy, from about 1942. he did several art deco typoe vases and figures. very nice description, thank you… value is around 75.00. thanks, steve n rose
