Red Wing 430

Question:
I picked up a piece of pottery at a thrift store today which is marked "Red Wing USA 430" on the bottom. It is a very unusual design. It is a square, about 8" tall and 2" wide, which is slightly smaller on the front than the back (the sides slope front to back). There is a square cut out in the center with a bird figurine perched on it. It is green on the outside and yellow on the inside. The finish is a shiny glaze – the pottery under the glaze is white. It’s in pretty good condition, although the bird has a small chip off the end of the wing in the back. I can send a picture if you need one as soon as I dig up some batteries for the camera, although it’s so unusual I would think you could work off of the description! I would love to know anything about this piece. Thank you!

Answer: No pic is necessary, your description is very good (a shape number is even better). It was designed in 1953. The glaze color is called Woodland Green. It’ is an unusual shape. They have a value of around 65.00 or so. thanks, steve n rose

Red Wing Lamp

Question:
Hello To All, I have is lamp.. with an awesome glaze. At first I thought it was Stangl with a Rust glaze. Another collector was visiting and we were doing show and tell with mystery pots and out came this lamp. He said right off.. Red Wing.. and the glaze is super rare.. thus may question.. Can you clear up the mystery? Is this a Redwing lamp.. The lamp shape is indeed in the Ray Reiss book on page 94 lower left.. with number 24B.. this lamp itself is numbered 1094. I can not find any examples of this glaze on any item in the Riess book.. Thank You in Advance

Answer: Hi, It is a lamp made by Red Wing. For some reason, lamp shape numbers are a bit odd. It’s not a real rare glaze, it’s listed in a 1938 catalog as Red Wing- orange and bay. Collectors call it scarlet and bay. Lamps are a harder sell, even in a nice shape such as this. On page 190 of his first book there are a couple of examples. hope this helps, thanks, steve n rose
