Question:
I have this 8 gallon salt glazed red wing churn. It has a lazy eight design. The bottom had a hole along with a hole in the side. There was also a rim chunk missing. I filled all of these areas with putty, sanded them down then put clear over the whole thing. This piece was broken in many pieces and has been glued back together. This piece is ruff, but an 8 gallon salt glaze churn with leaves in the red wing book has a value of around $5000. I was just wondering if my churn considering the rare size has any value? Thanks!! Sorry don’t have a pcture. Jordan

Answer: Jordan, your salt glazed butter churn with all this damage and repairs will have a very low value. That $5000 eight gallon Red Wing churn had birch leaves or a butterfly decoration which is quite rare. The lazy 8 decoration is very common, plus just about every other mid-western stoneware company used that decoration. With this being said, your churn may not even be Red Wing. Either way, with all this damage and the repair you made, the value is between $75 & $150. Collectors are looking for rare and perfect condition. This is what gets the value to that $5000 area.
