Question:
Size: 6 gallon (I believe) Condition: scuffs, stains. No breaks, cracks or chips. Decorations: no art just markings Markings: 1. Large blue no. 6 2. Red Redwing logo 3. Blue oval containing "Redwing union stoneware co. Redwing, MINN" 4. blue "PATENTED Dec. 21st 1915" 5. not familiar with glazing techniques. I have two of these that have been in my possesion since March of 1979. My Grandfather told me his father bought them when he (my grandfather) was a teenager (pre 1920) and used them to make sauerkraut. Would just like to verify authenticity. Approximate value would be interesting to know but they are not for sale. Wade
Answer: Wade, the 6 gallon Red Wing crock shown here was produced between 1915 & 1930. Therefore the history of your grandfather purchasing these crocks pre-1920 does make sense. If you clean them up (scrub them with a good scouring pad and detergent) ……don’t worry, you can’t hurt the crocks or their glazes), the value would be between $80 & $125 depending on how well they come out.
