Question:
5 gallon Western Stoneware whisky jug. Brown top, tan bottom with handle. Great condition, one small chip by the handle base. I understand it’s not red wing at least to my knowledege, but I dont know who to ask. I know nothing about glaze or anything or how you can even tell. All I know it’s heavy and has a logo on it and everyone that see’s this stops with amazment. Wondering about the peice, where it came from, how much if any is it worth and so on. Thanks alot for your time Jamie

Answer: Jamie, I do not collect Western Stoneware, so I cannot help you with it’s value. I can with the glazes. The top of the jug is Albany Slip. This brown glaze comes from Albany, New York. What the potters did at the pottery was to tip the dome top of the jug into the Albany slip after the bottom was brushed with a creamy white zinc glaze. The jug was most likely fired around 2300 degrees F. Al Kohlman
