Question:
I have a stoneware jar, obviously a canning jar because it has the wire attached that would hold the lid in place (no lid unfortunately). It is 7 inches tall and 4 inches wide at the bottom. There are no markings at all. It is in real good condition, no cracks or hairlines, but does have some chips around the rim and darkening under the glaze. I sure would appreciate it if you could tell me what to call it, and its approximate value. Thank you very much. Susan
Answer: Susan, your jar is called a Safety Valve jar which is an early canning jar. It is not Red Wing though. Value with no lid and not Red Wing or a signed piece, and value will be quite low. Maybe $10 to $15. Al Kohlman
