Question:
Would like to know any information that anyone would have on these clay culverts/sewer pipes? They stand 39" high, 41" diameter outside of bell and 30" inside diameter. Weigh approx. 300-400 lbs. each. Some are stamped Redwing and others are stamped What Cheer. I do have more pictures of them if needed. Thanks, Roger

Answer: Roger, in 1891 the Red Wing Sewer Pipe Company incorporated and soon purchased the Red Wing Wagon Factory on Main & Jackson. Also the J.H. Rich Sewer Pipe works was formed and their factory was built on Featherstone Road. These two firms were able to make and use a lower quality clay for their sewer pipes. The industry continued in Red Wing, MN until the 1970′s (information from Red Wing Potters & Their Wares). Each year a number of side stamped sewer pipes show up at the July Convention. Because of their size and low appeal, their value is quite low. Now the stamped "What Cheer" side stamped I have never seen before. This could be from the J.H. Rich Sewer Pipe works, Red Wing Sewer Pipe Co. or another sewer pipe company. Hope this helps. Al Kohlman
