Question:
Can’t find any information about a 2 gallon salt glazed birch leaf butter churn with lid in mint condition. The oval in blue reads Red Wing Union Stoneware Co. Red Wing, Minn. It is 12.5" tall by 8" diameter with a 6 1/4" opening with the lid off. The lid does have some minor chipping on the underside that comes in contact with the churn. The lid is 6 3/4" in diameter with no markings. Thanks for any information you can provide. Ron
Answer: Ron, your Red Wing 2 gallon butter churn was manufactured sometime between 1900 and 1912. The lid on your churn is not a Red Wing churn lid, but came from a different stoneware company. The oval on your churn is called the Ski Oval and it is the first or thirteen ovals produced by the Red Wing Stoneware Company. If your churn had an original Red Wing lid in mint condition, the value would be between $500 & $550. A mint 2 gallon Red Wing Churn lid sells for around $200. Al Kohlman
