Question:
Looking for information on a 20 gal Red Wing crock. Good condition. Brown interior, built in handles, blue single flower painted on crock along with the number 20. Stamped/indented directly below the flower at the bottom front of the crock is: Redwing stoneware Minnesota (in an oval). It has been in our family since the early 1960′s however I have no history of it prior to that time. We also have two 8 gal crocks, one with wire and wood handles, the number 8 stamped on it, an actual red wing stamp and a blue stamp with company info. the 2nd 8 gal has molded handles, the blue stamped 8 and two blue stamped leaves along with a blue stamp with company info. I will be having the photos converted to a disc so I can send them at a later date. However based on the general information provided, what can you tell me about these crocks? Thank- you for your time! Karolynn
Answer: Karolynn, you have me somewhat stumped on the Red Wing 20 gallon which has a flower and front stamped "Red Wing Stoneware". My best guess is what we collectors refer to as a "Butterfly" rather than a flower. However, only a guess and it could be a flower, but these are quite rate. Before I go any further on this crock I really need to see a photo of it to tell for sure. Also, let me know the condition of it so I can give you an honest value. Make sure to look for any cracks, chips or hairlines. Use a very damp cloth and wipe it down with it while you inspect it. Any hairlines in the crock will show up rather quickly.
The two 8 gallon crocks are a little different as well. The 8 gallon with Red Wing and handles was manufactured by the Red Wing Stoneware Company after 1915 and before 1947. In mint condition the value is between $100 & $150. Now the price will depend on how large the Red Wing. The (larger the better – 6 inch – 4 1/2 inch or 2 7/8 inch), how well stamped, balance and so forth. The 8 gallon with leaves was manufactured by the Minnesota Stoneware Company. Again another problem. There were two types of leaves produced and one set of leaves has a greater value than the other so in order for me to give you a value I need a photo of this crock as well. This crock was manufactured between 1885 & 1906. Send photos to director@redwingcollectors.org and I will be happy to help you out. Sounds like you have some nice pieces here. Al Kohlman
