Question:
Hi, Thank you so much for your help on my other crocks, I really appreciate it. I ended up selling one, giving the other away and I have kept one and used the glueing technique you recommended on it. I was hoping you could help me out with two more crocks I have. I am thinking of letting one go and keeping one, not sure which one though. As you can see, they are the dame except for their finish. I don’t even know what these are called or what they are used for or if they ever had lids? I have heard maybe they were used for snuff, preserves or pickles? They are each about 8 1/2" tall and about 5′ across at the top lip. The light one has a few chips on the very bottom and a smalll hairline crack near the top that does not go through. The brown one is in very good shape and is missing a spot of glaze in one spot. Both are faintly stamped redwing on the bottom. Any help with the name, proper usage and aprox value would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your time. Loreen

Answer: Loreen, you have a pair of Red Wing Preserve/Snuff jars. The Preserve & Snuff jars are very similar in shape and size and came with stone lids. Snuff jars were advertised in 1/2 to 20 lb sizes. Preserve jars were advertised in 1/4 to 2 gallon sizes. I would think your jars would be close to the 1 gallon size. With lids, they book around $50 each. Al Kohlman
