Question:
I purchased this last weekend and would like any info.on it,what was it used for,how old, value things like that. Also what is the best thing to use for cleaning such an item? Thanks.
Answer: You have a Red Wing 5 gallon ball lock jar. These were produced by the Red Wing Stoneware Company from the early 1920′s and into the 1930′s. They came in 2,3 & 5 gallon sizes. Many collectors call these ball lock jars "apple sauce jars". They were used for canning and apparently used to store apple sauce. You can clean this piece with a strong detergent with a scrubbing pad if you wish. You may also use paint stripper to remove any paint that may be on it. Strippers and strong detergents will not harm the glaze. In mint condition, the 5 gallon Red Wing ball locking jar (complete) would have a value between $300 & $350. Al Kohlman
