Question:
hello: I just acquired a 2 gal.crock with lid. NO oval or impressed markings but a curly, fancy "2" and birchleaves on the side in blue; they appear to be stencilled (?). the lid is button, petal, but with NO number. is it original to this crock or was it intended for a water cooler as someone has suggested. and how old might the crock be and why doesn’t it have an oval or other markings like all the ones I’ve seen? also, value please. thanks.

Answer: Your 2 gallon Birch leaf crock with no oval was most likely produced for the Sears & Roebuck Company. Crocks produce for Sears & Roebuck were produced without the ovals. The button lid with the petals was produced for this crock and is an early made lid than the bar handle lid. Button lids are use by collectors on Ice water coolers (this is were your friend is also correct) also and are much harder to come by than the bar handle lids. Your crock in mint condition would have a value of $50 to $65. Your lid in mint condition would have a value between $150 & $175. Al Kohlman
