Question:
I have several Red Wing made stoneware crocks and jugs with Utah advertising on them. I collect Utah advertising stoneware and Utah bottles, but my favorites are those screw top pieces with the Utah advertising.

I have three quart pieces with blue stencil from Bountiful, Sandy, and Kaysville Utah. They look great together. I also have a nice 12 gal. with the Bountiful advertising and a 1/2 gal. jug from the Louisville liquor Co. in Salt Lake. On the screw top pieces. I think my Kaysville and the Sandy are the only ones known with two of the quart Bountiful ones known and one whole and one glued together in the 1/2 gal. Bountiful. I know of one quart piece from Tremonton and a 1/2 gal. from Farmington. I would like to put them all together on my shelf. The 12 gal. Bountiful is the largest advertising crock known from Utah and was my wife’s grandmothers crock. The last one I bought, I am paying $2,500 for. Do you think that is about right for the piece. I know I would have to pay that much for the Farmington and possibly more for the Tremonton. Thank you David Emett

Answer: David, it sounds like you have a very nice Utah advertising collection. I am not quite sure of your question regarding $2,500 being to much for. What piece did you want to purchase for $2,500 or did you purchase your wife’s grandmothers 12 gallon crock for this price? If it was your grandmothers 12 gallon Utah advertising crock I would say you did quite well. Red Wing Utah advertising pieces are not common and will always demand a high value. Many times I look at the piece itself. It may over priced, but the piece may be outstanding. Then I ask myself, will I ever find another as good or like it? I usually always make the purchase and though the years the value on these outstanding pieces have never disappointed me. Al Kohlman
