Question:
I purchased a Pierre cookie jar at an estate sale this weekend. I am wondering if it is a reproduction. Everything looks ‘right’ except the bottom stamp also includes patent numbers which I have not found on any other pictures of this cookie jar. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer:
The Chef Pierre cookie jar was made for many years, from 1941 to the mid-1950s. Your jar has three different marks: Red Wing USA impressed from the mold, an upright wing ink stamp, and the patent numbers ink stamp. This indicates that your cookie jar was made early in production. The patent marks were applied for a rather brief period then no longer used. The wing ink stamp disappeared in the late 1940s, leaving the impressed Red Wing USA as the sole mark for production after that time. Your Chef is not a reproduction, and most collectors would place a higher value on a jar with all three markings.
