Random Harvest Tid Bit tray

Question:

Hello! Today I picked up a Random Harvest 3-tiered serving dish. I have not been able to find any information about this particular item and would appreciate anything you could share about it.

Thanks!

Beth

Answer:

Collectors refer to this as a tidbit tray.  Tidbit trays were not shown in dinnerware brochures or dealer price lists, but were included on ”Gift or Novelty” brochures.  The brochure included a disclaimer that tidbit trays could not be ordered for a specific pattern.  The factory would send whatever tidbit trays were available at the time of the order.

Tidbit trays can be found in various 1-tier, 2-tier and 3-tier configurations.  Some tidbit trays have a small bowl as the top tier.  Red Wing made and sold tidbit trays as a way to use up surplus stock.  That’s why they could not be ordered in a specific pattern.

Because they were not standard dinnerware production items, some collectors feel tidbit trays have no value; that are merely plates and bowls ruined by drilling a hole in the middle.  Other collectors believe they have value because they were assembled by Red Wing workers and offered for sale as novelty items.  A 3-tiered tidbit tray in excellent condition is worth around $25.

Saxon Line, early brushedware

Question

Hello, I can’t find anything like this anywhere. I can only say from what I have read that it’s an 1880′s cold painted artware vase. We are selling and don’t know what to put on it. It seems rare. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks, Robb

Answer

this would be some of the earliest brushedware/art pottery from Red Wing, the Saxon line, I haven’t seen one sell, I would guess somewhere in the 200.00 range.  Not much info on it, just a few show up every now and then.  thanks, steve n rose

2014 Commemorative will once again have an accessory piece

Red Wing, MN -  For the second time in the RWCS 2014 Commemorative will have an accessory piece.

This premium piece will once again only be purchased by members who pick up their commemorative at the Convention. It can be pre-ordered for $12 and a limited quantity will be available to purchase onsite for $15. We can’t tell you what this accessory piece is because it would give away the identity of the Commemorative itself. Last year the 2013 Commemorative was a stoneware dog and the accessory piece was a dog dish.

The 2014 Commemorative accessory is sort of along those same lines, except it will be fired in the kilns by Red Wing Stoneware. We expect this will be a popular piece and won’t be surprised if the limited quantity onsite sells out, so members are encouraged to order in advance.

Members can order their accessory piece when the register for convention.

Answer:

This item is from the Ceramastone line, Red Wing’s final line of dinnerware.  It was made in 1966-1967.  Red Wing brochures refer to this piece as a “Handled Serving Dish”.  This dark brown dish was intended to be used with either the Hearthstone Beige or Heatherstone patterns.  Value is around $25 if it is in excellent, undamaged condition.

3 gallon salt glazed upturned leaf crock, North Star

Question:

Hi,

I picked this 3 gallon leaf salt glaze crock up at an antique shop and wondering if this could be a North Star piece and today’s value. No hairlines, chips (even on handles) or cracks. Does have a slight narrow stain streak on the side.

Thanks! Jay

Answer:

Jay, your 3 gallon salt glazed upturned leaf crock looks to be North Star.  Value would be between $250 & $275.  Al Kohlman
