RWCS Partners with Local Potter for Convention Demonstration

Local Potter Richard Spiller to Demonstrate at Red Wing Collectors Society Convention July 12-14

Red Wing, MN – The Red Wing Collectors Society is pleased to announce that Richard Spiller has accepted an invitation to demonstrate his pottery craft at the 2012 RWCS Convention.

It has been the long-standing tradition of the RWCS Convention to invite a potter or pottery company to demonstrate their craft during the Annual Convention in Red Wing, MN.  Ephraim Pottery, of Lake Mills, Wis. has actively participated in the event for the past five years, but had a schedule conflict for the 2012 Convention.

RWCS Executive Director Stacy Wegner heard about Spiller’s Gas Kiln Firing class being held at the Anderson Center at Tower View in Red Wing. Wegner contacted the Anderson Center inviting Spiller or another potter in residence to attend the Convention, and Spiller accepted.

“We appreciate the commitment of Ephraim Pottery sharing their knowledge and craft with our members and we look forward to having Spiller at the 2012 Convention,” Wegner said.

A resident of rural Wisconsin, Spiller was educated at Western Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin – Madison. An Emeritus Professor of Art at Eastern Carolina University, Spiller has been a practicing potter and ceramic artist for nearly 50 years. His expertise included kiln building with firing experience from corn cob raku to Tozan Noboigama and firing to cone 10 reduction.

The Red Wing Collectors Society Convention is slated for July 12-14, 2012 at Red Wing High School in Red Wing. The RWCS expects to have more than 1,000 of its members attend the event, which will celebrate the club’s 35th anniversary.

4 gallon lazy 8 salt glazed churn

Question:

We recently purchased a 4 gallon salt glaze churn with what we thought might be a “lazy 8” and were wondering if it is Red Wing, and if so – the approximate value.  I’ve attached 5 pictures showing the detail.  Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!Thank you,

Jon

Answer:

Jon, your 4 gallon lazy 8 salt glazed churn is Red Wing.  Because the decoration is quite common, it does not carry the value of the leaves or rib cages, but still a nice piece.  In perfect condition the value is $250 to $300.  Al Kohlman

Red Wing Ice Tea cooler, no wing or oval

Question:

Hello Al, i have a 2 Gallon Red Wing Iced Tea Cooler. Everthing works, there is no cracks, leaks, or scratches on it. The only thing that is wrong is i have somehow misplaced the lid. I know that will hurt the cost. However could you please tell the price of the rest of the item please? Thank you and have a good day.

Answer:

A Red Wing Ice Tea cooler with just the words “Ice Tea Cooler” and no red wing or oval in perfect condition without the lid, is around $300. Now if you had the 2 gallon Red Wing water cooler lid and it was in perfect condition, you could add another $500 to the total. Al Kohlman

Self-Draining Jar, 15 gallon

Question:

Hi:

We purchased this item at an auction.  We do not know what it is but were told it is a self-draining jar.  It is 20″ tall and about 15″ wide.  It is wide open on one end and has a drain hole in the other end about the size of a half dollar piece.  We put it next to our 8 gallon crocks and it is much larger-it must be a 10 or 12 gallon size.

The writing says:

       Red Wing

Union Stoneware Co.

    Red Wing, Minn.

This is the only writing on the piece and it is in very good condition, only two very tiny chips, no other chips or cracks.

We were also told there was some kind of a stand for it.  We are interested in the value of this piece and if there is a stand for it.  Thank you for your time.

Answer:

You do indeed have a Red Wing self-draining jar. It looks like it could be even a 15 gallon size. Some collectors find a crock this size and set the self-drainer on top of it with the funnel of the self-drainer now sitting inside the bottom crock. Others make a stand for them. They are quite neat, but take up quite a bit of space to display them correctly. Space is what takes the value away from these self-drainers as collector at one point or another run out of it. In mint condition, the value is around $150 to $175. Al Kohlman

Red Wing Stoneware Company Butter Crock, bottom marked

Question:

We have a small crock by the Red Wing Stone Ware Company. The bottom of the crock is signed. The piece measures 5.5″ across by approximately 3.5″ tall. It was a part of my grandmother’s antique dairy collection.

There aren’t any markings as to the size that can be contained. There is a small gold mark on the front, but from looking at hundreds of listings on ebay we can’t find a similar mark.

Can you give more information on the history/use of this crock and an approximate value?

Thank you in advance.
Crystal

Answer:

Your grandmother has a Red Wing butter crock.  It was produced between 1895 & 1920.  With the chips and not decorations the value is between $25 & $35 in today’s market.  Al Kohlman
