Capistrano Divided Veggie tray

Question:
I acquired a stamped on bottom Red Wing dish with 2 sections, each has what appears to be a black and yellow bird with fruit. The pottery has a screen texture with white glaze. It measures 13 1/2" x 8". What can you tell me about this piece? Thanks. Kendra

Answer: Capistrano was introduced in 1953 and was made into the early 1960s. This pattern was designed by Charles Murphy. Murphy was Red Wing’s principal designer from 1941 until the close of the business in 1967. Value for this pitcher is $50-75 if it in excellent, undamaged condition. The value below for your pieces is based on mint condition.

Divided Vegetable Dish $20-25

Any damage (chips, cracks, crazing, hairlines) will diminsh the value by more than half.

RWCS Launches New Young Collectors Club at 2011 Convention

NEW RWCS Young Collectors Club

In celebration of the 35th Annual RWCS Convention July 7-9, 2011 in Red Wing, MN, the RWCS Young Collectors Club: Continuing the Tradition……. Will make its debut.

Parents and Grandparents do you know a possible collector between the ages of 15-20 years old? Bring them to the RWCS Convention this summer. Young collectors can come see old friends meet new ones and learn about Red Wing.

For many years, the RWCS faced the challenge of encouraging the next generation to maintain its interest in Red Wing’s wares and the RWCS. Eleven years ago, Wendy Callicoat and Sue Jones Tagliapietra, who at the time were members of the RWCS Executive Board, developed the KidsView Educational Program at the RWCS Convention to attract a younger generation of collectors to the RWCS.

“This program has developed into an exceptional part of the RWCS,” Callicoat says. “We have seen many kids come to our seminars during summer Convention and enjoy the activities of KidsView, only to age out and lose interest when they graduate from the program at age 15. In years past, many of the graduates have volunteered to assist during KidsView activities.”

Callicoat says the new challenge has been retaining KidsView participants’ interest in collecting as they become teenagers and young adults. Therefore, new education and retention opportunities were explored, and the new program was created for young adult collectors.

Young collectors are encouraged to attend sessions from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, July 7 and 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 8, where they will develop new friendships through peer-to-peer discussion groups and hands-on activities.

Collectors are encouraged to bring their computers for use during the sessions. A field trip will also be taken to the Pottery Place Street Sale, so participants should bring some spending money. Young collectors who participate in this first year of the program will become a charter member of the RWCS Young Collectors Club and receive a special stoneware crock to commemorate the beginning of this adventure.
Young Collectors who attend this year will be considered Charter members of the RWCS Young Collectors. There will be special stoneware crocks distributed to collectors who attend to commemorate this special year.

Watch for more details about the schedule of events on the RWCS Website, on Facebook RWCS/ Kids View Facebook pages, or Twitter @RWPotttery. If you are interested in attending or volunteering during the new program or have a question please contact Wendy Callicoat crocks701@aol.com.

Red Wing bowl

Question:
I have a Red Wing bowl I picked up at a yard sale years ago just because we liked the look of it. It is marked Red Wing USA on the bottom. It is 12"x11"X6" and a speckled tan color. Not only is it oblong but the top rim actually has a wave to it. There is a 1/4" chip on the bottom base and about 1/16" (or smaller) chip on the top rim. Both are not easily visible unless one tries to find them. Otherwise the condition is good.
