Orleans Pattern Dinnerware

Question:
The time has come to downsize! I have my parents collection of Red Wing dinnerware that would appear to be the Orleans Provincial (1941)design. The set has been untouched since 1987 and is in good (some spalling but no cracking and a noticable chip on one soup bowl lid) to excellent (some pieces look almost new) condition. I have the pitcher, approximatley 9" tall, that is the sample picture on your website and, other than that the flowers on mine are painted on a more vertical line, they are identical. I would note that the color of the main flowers on my pitcher as well as the entire set are in a light violet tint while your picture makes them look more orange but that may either be the size of your picture or the artisans were given leeway to use different hues. To save time I am not including pictures but would be glad to if it were important to you. The set has the following pieces:

PIECE # Dinner plates 8 (10" diameter)
Lunch/Salad plates 5 (7" diameter)
Fruit plates 7 (6" diameter)
Soup bowls 8 Soup bowl lids 8 (with flower handle)
Coffee cups 7 Coffee saucers 8
Tea pot w/ lid 1
Vegetable server 1 (w/ handle & 8" diameter)
Veg. server lid 1 (w/ flower handle Fruit bowl (shallow)
1 (12" diameter)
Pitcher 1
Platter round 1 (14" diameter)
Salt shaker 1
Pepper shaker 1

I am also curious as to whether these pieces are dishwasher safe. Our dishwasher does not have a heating/drying element but uses the retained heat from the water to dry.

As further background, my sense is that this set would have been purchased through Macy*s New York as my father was an executive with them for nearly 40 years. I remember these plates mostly used as everyday service when I was a little boy in the mid-1950′s so would have to assume they were purchased some time in the 1940′s.

If there are any questions you have that would help you please send them to me at the email address provided. Thank you for your input, Michael

North Star 8 gallon salt glaze

Question:
I have an 8" salt glaze cover that I think is North Star. The knob is exactly like the one on the shard shown on page 20 in "A Guide to Red Wing Markings" by David Newkirk (1986). The underside is Albany Slip. It has a small chip on the rim that hardly shows from the top and a couple on the underside. I would like to get any information you might have on this piece and approximate value. Thank you, Dayton

Lexington Rose pattern

Question:
Please identify the pattern in the attached photo. The bottom of the plate is stamped with the words, "Redwing Pottery" and "Hand Painted", while the cup is stamped "May 7 1948". The shape is "concord" and the colors are light to dark pink for the rose and varying shades of green for the leaves very much like "Blossom Time". The cup has a rose on the inside and the outside. I have several plates, saucers, cups and one oval serving platter. The platter is in very good shape while the plates and cups have varying amounts of crazing. Thank you for your help.

North Star Pitcher with grape design

Question:
I have a beautiful, blue shaded, with a grape design, pitcher. It is blue on the outside and sort of gray or maybe a whitish color on the inside and on the bottom. It also has a raised star on the bottom. It doesn’t seem to fit any of the categories exactly. I’ve read up and the best I can do is early 1900. Someone told me it was North Star because of the raised star on the bottom. But, another said it was from Ohio Pottery because North Stars star wasn’t raised. Thnaks so much, Sharon

Gopher on a stump

Question:
I found a piece of Red Wing pottery while in the process of gutting my bathroom for a remodel. Description. Its a small (I would say toothpick holder could be its function?) It is all Brown, 3" x 3" Log that lays flat with a branch coming off the top of it (this is the piece that has the hole…for whatever it is suppose to be used as) There is a chipmunk or maybe striped gopher "crawling" up the side of the log. Stamped on the bottom with Red Wing and R.W. Pottery Very fun find, considering I collect Red Wing Vases!

Answer: That is a nice surprise, hope everyone doesn’t start tearing out the walls now…..

It’s part of the Minnesota/Michigan rivalry. there are two, one a gopher, one a badger. Value is around 200.00. thanks, steve n rose
