Water Coolers, Jugs and Crocks

Question:
I am from central Wisconsin, Appleton Area. I got alot of stoneware from my grandfather. I wanted to know information such as price and maybe breif history on the 10 gallon water cooler, with original spout. The union stoneware print is about 2 and 3/4 inches long. The other large 10 gallon crock has not Pattened on it and no handles. Want to price and history, i assume it is older and not worth alot. The biggest question i had was information and prices on the beehive jugs. The brown on is unmarked and i think i saw it in a collectors price guide(85 dollars). The other one is a 4 gallon jug with turkey droppings and a target and tail design. Is this a more favorable design than the rib and tail. How about price i saw in a price guide for rib design a price of 2,500 plus; but i doubt ever see it. I am a young collector 22years of age and find a great thrill in redwing hunting. I also have other pattened 10 gallon crocks, and McCombs stoneware products but think am finding Red Wing more interesting. Also trying to find the best id and price guide book on the market today can you suggest one. The couple that i have looked at so far do not have alot of water colors, target tail design, or common wing and union stoneware products in them. Thank you.

Sponge-band butter pail

Question:
I have a five pound Gray Line butter jar with no lid or bail. It is in very good condition. The picture shows what I think is a production flaw in the middle of the side of the jar. What is its value? I bought it at a mall antique show in Detroit a few years ago. The dealer thought it was a hanging flower pot and didn’t know it was Red Wing. I knew better. Thank you.

Gypsy Trail coffee server

Question:
Just came across your site and I really like it. I have a piece of pottery, an orange pitcher/server with a wood handle that I was told it was gypsy trail. I have found this may be part of red wing pottery. The pitcher has a shiny glaze over the entire piece. There are a few scuff marks but overall condition is very good with no chips or cracks (noticable). I would like to know is this indeed a red wing piece, from what era and if it is red wing, why there is no marking. Also, I would like to know estimated worth. Thanks for your time Jarid S

Monmouth’s Pottery Celebration announced

Celebrating Monmouth, Illinois’ historic tradition of creating quality stoneware and pottery is the idea behind our annual Pottery on the Square Swap Meet event on June 28th, 2008 starting at 8:00am. Monmouth’s history with stoneware and pottery dates back to the 1890’s and continues today with the new WS Inc. d.b.a. Western Stoneware and Maple City Pottery, both of Monmouth.

With the success of the pottery swap meet that was held in June of 2006 and 2007 the Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce and its Pottery Event Committee is organizing the event again for 2008. “We received a lot of positive feedback from the last two year’s attendees indicating they would be interested in another event” stated Angela McElwee, Executive Director of the Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce. “We had attendees from 6 states, and we would like to build upon that by inviting collectors from various pottery clubs for this year’s event.”

Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Monmouth’s Public Square, activities will include a pottery and stoneware swap meet, pottery demonstration, and window displays of rare pottery pieces. Also returning to the event this year is the pottery appraisal clinic where knowledgeable Illinois pottery collectors will be on hand to examine pieces of Illinois pottery brought by the public. According to the event Chairman, Fred Jenks, “we plan to bring back the appraisers clinic as it was popular among area residents.” A pottery/stoneware consignment auction will begin at 10:30am. The public is welcome to bring items the day of the event for the auction or can register them ahead of time and have them advertised on the auctioneer’s website www.burnsauctionservice.com. Swap meet and consignment auction participants are not limited to Illinois pottery.

In conjunction with the event the Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce is offering to the public an opportunity to purchase a handcrafted limited- edition, three-quarter sized leaf and scroll pitcher. The pitcher will be burgundy and white and have a Burgundy “Western Stoneware” leaf logo on one side and “Pottery on the Square, June 28, 2008, Monmouth, Illinois” also in burgundy on the other side. There will be a small maple leaf on each side of the wording. A detailed embossed maple leaf will be on the bottom of the pitcher. Orders are currently being taken for the pitchers that will be available the day of the event. The deadline for orders is June 1st and they are priced at $35. Shipping charges vary based on quantity.

For more information on the event or the commemorative pitchers please contact the Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce at 309-734-3181 or e-mail maccdir@maplecity.com

Top Hat art Pottery

Question:
I found a top hat in a thrift store and was wondering how to identify it as Red Wing if it is not marked. The hat is 4 1/4 inches tall and 5 3/4 inches at the widest part of the brim. The glaze is a very light yellow or cream color and the bottom is solid glaze with the three tripod marks. Could you tell me the value if it should be Red Wing? Thank you

Answer: hello, Red Wing did make a top hat shape, they are usually marked, look closely under the glaze. Value is about 40.00 or so. thanks, steve n rose
