Gypsy Trail Juicer

Question: {mosimage}
We have a Red Wing #256 juicer with the cuop and can find very little about it. My wife’s mother got it as a wedding gift in the 1940′s. It is bright yellow. I am attaching a picture and would appreciate any information about it including value, condition, years made ect.

Answer:
Jim,
Your juicer and cup were part of the Gypsy Trail Hostess Ware line and was made in the early 1940s. The juicer itself is uncommon, and the set together is quite rare. Most cups were lost or separated from its juicer over the years, so having the pair together is a big plus. Yellow is by far the most common color; the set is sometimes found in white and supposedly was made in the other Gypsy Trail colors as well.

In excellent condition this set would be worth around $300 to $400. Colors other than yellow or white would be worth more, perhaps by as much as 50%. Your set appears to be in very good condition, but your photo shows the juicer has crazing in the glaze and the cup has a hairline. This will somewhat reduce the value of your set, about 15 to 20%. Any additional damage (especially chips) not visible in the photo would further reduce the value.

Five Gallon Jug (not RW)

Question: {mosimage}
Was wondering if this is a Red Wing 5 gallon jug? Jug is in good shape with a small chip on the bottom. Can you tell me its value and if not a Red Wing who made it? Thanks, Patty T.

Answer:
Patty, your jug is not Red Wing. I have no idea of who the maker could be. The glaze is wrong and the decoration is scratched in. Red Wing scratched in their gallon-age, but not a decoration that I know of. Approximate value would be in the area of $200. Al Kohlman

Spongeware Bowl Value

Question:
Hello, I have a small Red Wing (I think) spongeware bowl that was passed down to me from my grandmother. It measures 5 3/8 inches across from the top outside edge. I was at an antique show several years ago and a dealer was asking $600 for an identical bowl. I asked him why that one was so much more than any other ones he had and he said that the 5 inch bowl is very rare. Is this true? The bottom is about 3 inches across and it has 6 raised "ribs " around the outside. Thank you for any information you can give me as to it’s value. Let me know if you need a picture.

Linda P. It’s in perfect condition

Answer:
Linda, the Red Wing 5 " sponged panel bowl is the rarest of these bowls. If the bowl has dark outstanding sponge of Red and Blue, they can demand $600. The lighter the sponge the less the value. Al Kohlman
