8 Gallon Water Cooler

Question:
Can you tell me anything about the history/value my 8 gallon Red Wing water cooler? I haven’t been able to locate the cooler in any Red Wing reference books. There is an 8 stamped on the inside bottom of the cooler and a fine Y shaped hairline crack on the inside bottom. Thanks. Jim

Answer:
Jim, your 8 gallon Red Wing transition Cooler with the hexagon bung hole is rare. The bung hole is from the early salt glaze era and was eliminated during the style changes from Ice Waters to Water Coolers. You will find some Ice Waters with hexagon bung holes, but very few Water Coolers. The last catalog showing hexagon bung holes was 1895. So it is hard to give a date as to when your Cooler was manufactured. However, it had to be in the first stages in theproduction of Water Coolers. With the tight spider, I
would value your Cooler in the range of $1300 to$1800. Al Kohlman

Butter Crock (4 inch)

Question: {mosimage}
Hello, I have come across a very small beater jar that measures 4 inches tall and a diameter of 3 and 1/2 inches. It is marked M.S.Co. Red Wing Minn. on the bottom. It has the concave bottom on the inside. I have been unable to find this jar in any of the Red Wing reference books. Can you please tell me if this is a common piece or more on the rare side? I am going to try to send a picture for you to see. Any information would certainly be helpful. Thank you so much for your time and effort. Sincerely, T.C.

Answer:
T.C. thanks for the photo as this helps me better understand your question. The photo looks like the Minnesota White High butter crocks. The 1 quart size is the most difficult to find and are valued around $100. The concave bottom however does sound like an early beater jar, but I have never heard or seen a bottom marked beater jar such as yours. You may indeed have an odd ball, but either way, I would place the value at $100 do to no decorations and the concave bottom being the only factor that would or might separate it from a white high signed butter crock. 15 gallon Redwing Crock

Question:
I recently submitted a question but have not seen an answer. I have become interested in collecting Red Wing stoneware after seeing it so often on eBay. I was surprised to see a Red wing piece for sale at the recent Adirondacks antique show in Indian Lake, N.Y. I bought it for $180.00 but think I may have gotten off to a bad start as far as collecting Red Wing stoneware. It’s a 15 gallon crock with a blue 15 and a large wing but no oval or bottom marking. It has a spigot on the bottom and a hole near the top on the right side when viewing from the front and is in excellent condition. It also has a cover in great shape that is not marked but has the petals and a bail handle and looks just like one I’ve seen in a Red Wing book. The cover has a more salt glazed look to it than the more white looking crock. Could this have been a water cooler or perhaps just something used to make something like pickles? Did I pay way too much? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Fred C.

Answer:
Fred, it sounds like you made an excellent purchase with your 15 gallon Red Wing crock with lid. The crock alone is valued in the area of $200 to $250 with the large wing and two spigot holes. The spigot if stamped "Central" and in good condition is valued at $50. The lid (being a little salty brings the price down some) is valued between $100 & $150. With all this being said, if your piece is as nice as it sounds, you should have no problems doubling your investment should you decide to sell it. Al Kohlman

Dark Brown Hog

Question:
I have a dark brown hog or pig that looks very old. I just saw a Red Wing dog that looks very similar. I was hoping you could tell me whether Red Wing made a hog or pig and what it looked like. Perhaps a picture or I could send you one Thank you Maggie B.

Answer:
Maggie, Red Wing Stoneware Company did manufacture pigs around 1900. They came in 7 & 9 inch sizes. Also, Western Stoneware Company manufactured these pigs also. If you could send me a few photos of your pig at different angles and describe any damage I could help you out with value and tell you if indeed you own a Red Wing pig. Thanks, Al Kohlman
