Question:
I have several pieces of this set: water pitcher and buffet piece plus two bowls (large soup style) and a tea pot with lid. Can you tell me more about them or estimate a value? I have enclosed pics of the pitcher and buffet piece. thanks. Ginger
Answer: Your items are from the Smart Set dinnerware pattern. Smart Set was introduced by Red Wing in 1953 and made through 1957. It was a good seller in its day but fell by the wayside after the introduction of Bob White. Today Smart Set is very popular with both dinnerware collectors and collectors of items from the 1950s.
The pitcher in the photo is actually a beverage server. It should include a stopper with a corked base that fits into the opening. Without the stopper this piece is worth around $15-20. The 20 inch platter with warming stand and the teapot with cover are each worth $75-100. Bowls were made in five sizes and without a more thorough description and dimensions I cannot be sure of yours, but if they are soup bowl sized they are probably worth $15 to $25. All values assume excellent condition; any damage reduces the values significantly.
