Beth, you have a Red Wing safety valve jar (canning jar). Some of them have a pat. date of May 21, 1896 and they were discontinued around 1920. They came in 1 gal, 1/2 gal and 1 qt sizes. In perfect condition with lid, hardware and bottom signed, the value is between $75 & $100. Al Kohlman
