Question:
I am pretty new at collecting Red Wing, (some of my collection were gifts/hand me downs from family), so this is probably an extremely basic question but I am hoping you can help me out…or at least give me an idea of a good resource. What is the difference between the sizes of the red ‘Red Wing’ logo? I have a couple of crocks and a butter churn with a larger wing and a couple of crocks with a smaller wing. Is this due to where it was made, or time in Red Wing Pottery history? Does it change the value at all? (though I collect for the love of the pottery, not so much for the price value) Thank you for your time, Lynn

Answer: Lynn, yes, the larger the wings and ovals, the earlier the piece. Collectors love the 6 inch wings and larger ovals. When Red Wing began the zinc glaze pieces and began decorating the pieces with Red Wings, both the wings and ovals were large. Around 1912 the ovals were made somewhat smaller and the red wings sizes were reduced to 4 1/2" shortly after 1915. In 1930 till 1947, you will find the Red Wing pieces with the smallest wings and ovals. With all this being said, the later the piece the lower the values. Hope this helps. Al Kohlman
