Question:
I have the following 3 stoneware jugs that were handed dowm to me from my dad who acquired them from his dad. My dad was born in 1902 in Wisconsin and at age 5 the family had moved to Baltimore, so these jugs date either 1800s from the Heuer Farm in Wisconsin or 1900s from the Baltimore Farm. I know the one is a Beehive – It has some damage (see photos) and what looks like it could be a bullet hole (Civil War maybe – target practice?) The other is a 3 Gallon Brown/Tan Jug with a number 3 in what looks like its a heart. The smaller jug is a 1 Gallon Whiskey Jug with a very old wooden stopper that won’t come out. Can you shed any light on these…maker/value etc…) From what I remember as a little girl, they came with the family from Wisconsin so may have been in the family for some time prior to 1907. This photo is of the Beehive Jug. Other 2 below. Thanks.
Answer: All three of your father’s jugs are not Red Wing. The 3 gallon beehive could be eastern or Ohio. The two brown top shoulder jugs are most likely eastern. My guess is they were picked up in the Baltimore area. Al Kohlman
