Question:
I have found a very unique piece again and I need help in figuring out what it is. I can only hope it’s like the last one I came across a couple of months ago. It’s 8 and 1/4 inch tall salt glazed crock with the raised stamp on the bottom reading MInnesota Stoneware co Redwing Minn. across the top it measures about 7 3/4 inches across. The very weird thing about this piece is the black or dark blue drop of (whatever) in the middle of the jug with a small drip line. I have attached picture for your convenience. Thank you for any information Jon Black
Answer: Jon, you have a Minnesota Stoneware Company salt glazed 1 gallon crock that is bottom signed. That dark glob is what we call a turkey dripping. That turkey dripping was created by salt vapors that accumulated on the top of the kiln during the firing process, After time the accumulation of salt vapors begin to drip and one of the dripping just happen to land on this crock. If your crock is in perfect condition the value is $40 to $50 today. Al Kohlman
