Question:
Hello from Helena Montana!! I was hiking on the old Milwaukee railrod grade and in a number of places, within a mile of each other, have found chunks of pottery or crock material. These are of a rusty red glaze, one inch thick. One of the chunks has a rim in it where a lid must have set. The red wing stamp is on another piece. (1) Do you think the railroad hauled large crocks in the early years? I have to let you know this really has me intrigued. (2) Did Red Wing ever produce material for water culverts for the railroad. Thanks so much for your time and interest in the history of Red Wing!! Greg Beveridge Helena, MT 406-202-3959

Answer: Greg, Red Wing did indeed haul stoneware by rail. Also, the Red Wing Sewer Company produced clay sewer pipe which was also hauled by rail. Some of these sewer pipes can be found signed. Al Kohlman
