Question:
I just bought this crock and was wondering if you knew the make, year range and possible value? It has a 10 with a design under it that looks like a bee sting design. There is a small surface crack down the front which was patched. Also, do you know of a way to clean the staining produced from the patch as well? Thanks. Matt

Answer: Matt, your 10 gallon salt glazed crock decoration is called a lazy 8 with target mark.. It was made between 1867 & 1894. The crack down the front is more than a surface crack as I will bet it goes all the way through the crock. The crack is stained and to remove it would be extremely hard to do. You would need to acquire a formula to soak it in peroxide and bake it in an oven. The process takes quite a long time to complete. A crock of this size would be quite hard to find a tub and an oven large enough to handle it. After the stain was removed, you would still be left with a crack. Value as it sits now. $100 to $150.
