Question:
Can you please help me identify two stoneware items? I discovered them when helping clean out my late uncles garage. My aunt wanted to put them out with the other garbage, but said I could have them if I wanted them. After washing them I think they are beautiful. I am now a Red Wing fan. Anything you can tell me about their fabrication and history will be greatly apreciated. The crock is almost like new. No cracks or crazing, with only a few very small nicks. No maker marks on the bottom. Details: 14.875" tall 12" outside dia., at bottom Letter "6" is 1.875" tall X 1.25" wide "Wing" is 2" long X 1" high "Union Stoneware" oval is 1.75 long X 1.125 high The jug maker is unknown to me because there are no markings. Jug details: 13" tall 9" outside diameter 8.75" to shoulder 1.125 inner diameter spout I greatly look forward to hearing what you can tell me about this crock and jug. Thank You, Larry

Answer: Larry, your crock is somewhat unique as it does not have handles. Just about all the Red Wing crocks that were produced (other that 40, 50 & 60 gallons) after 1915 came with wire handles. Your 6 gallon was produced between 1930 & 1936 (after 1936 it would have had a Red Wing potteries oval). Value in perfect condition would be around $70 to $80. Your brown top jug could have been produced by Red Wing or the Western Stoneware company. I would need to see where the back base of the handle attaches to the jug to tell which company made it. Either way, without a decoration the value is low ($15 to $20). These jugs were use mainly for vinegar. Hope this helps. Al Kohlman
