Question:
Hi Al Kohlman, I submitted a question a few weeks ago about a Red Wing Christmas Jug 1882 and submitted a pic as well. (Please see old posts) I have more information for you. I was given this jug in 1972 by my wifes aunt in Chippewa Falls, WI. She was a very knowledgable collector and don’t think its a repo. I think you are right that is was an end of day piece. Also etched on the front is Kern Spring St. Peter MINN. The base inscript says "Red Wing Stoneware Co. Redwing Minnesota. It is very faint and glazed over and I have now included a photo of the base. Thanks, Jay

Answer: Jay, I remember your jug and also looked it up again. The photo you have here of the base, looks like the Red Wing Stoneware Co. Red Wing Minnesota was etched (scratched) in and not stamped. Because I have never seen this style (shape) in a Red Wing jug and the bottom stamp is etched in rather than stamped, I want to say this is not a Red Wing piece. Now it could have been a piece produced on an off time (lunch hour piece) and the potter etched all the wording on this jug. Because there is no history or another piece like this in any Red Wing books, I must question it’s authenticy. Al Kohlman
