Question:
Hi Al, Question on a 5&6 lid I recently bought on Ebay. I looked through some of the Red Wing books and only found info on double stamped crocks but not lids. As you can see, it is both stamped 5&6 and also marked w/the cobalt 5 and 6 under the glaze. I paid $160.00 for it and am hoping that I did ok on this. The lid is in what I would consider excellent shape. About the only thing that might affect the value would be a glaze pop on the bar handle under the lip (on side of bar handle.) What would your estimate for this be? Also, were there reasons for things being double stamped, or was it usually just an error? I could ses this being an error, but it is marked 2 different ways. Thanks for any info you can provide on this…Darrell
Answer: Darrell, you paid a fair price for your 5/6 gallon Red Wing lid. I have had a number of these lids as you have pictured here. There seems to be no rime or reason why some were stamped and incised and others just incised with the gallonage. I do think that the cobalt blue 5/6 does add to the beauty of the lid. Nice looking piece. I am sure it will enhance whatever it sits on. Al Kohlman
