Question:
This dark brown jug is 9 1/2" tall, the bottom measures 7 1/4". The glazing is irregular under the handle so it lookes chipped but it is not. There is a tiny chip on the back side of the handle that can be seen in the photo. It has a spout. The bottom has glazing stripes and looks like the maker wiped it off after they finished painting it. I was wondering what you could tell me about my jug?
Answer: You have an Albany slip syrup jug. The jug was dipped in a glaze called Albany slip which came from Albany, NY. The uneven glaze under the handle is from the potters fingers. They had to use their fingers to dip the jug in the Albany Slip and when they removed the jug and set it down, you can see where the Albany Slip could not get to the clay do to the potters fingers being under the handle.
