Question:
Hello I have been given a 5 gallon redwing jug. The number 5 is placed at the top and is not a beehive jug, has the redwing wing but no stamp under it. I am just wondering what year it was made and what it might be worth. All of my other redwing pottery has the stamp on it which I believe means it was made after 1915. The jug is in good condtion and does not have any cracks. I Thanks for your time! GretchenAnderson

Answer: Gretchen, the gallon-age on top of the dome of the shoulder jugs was a carry over when the Red Wing Stoneware Company merged with the Minnesota Stoneware Company. A number of the Minnesota potters came with the merger and they were used to placing the gallon-age number on the domes. This was a short period. Most likely right after 1917 which is when the hand turning of the stoneware jugs ended and molded jugs began. Al Kohlman
