Question:
I have a collection of crocks that I would like someone to review & provide me some type of information on them. Approximate age of crock, type, style, any history & value. Please forward this to the proper person for evaluation. Could I please be notified via e-mail to watch for the evaluation on the web page. Picture#12, (3) 5-Gallon crocks stacked, Railroad crock? no cover, no chips, no cracks, no blemishes, Excellent condition, Red wing potteries stamp on side of crock, picture is blurry, Thank You R W
Answer: RW, I have had these in the pass and all of mine had a spigot hole at the bottom. I was told these were Railroad water coolers. The information that was given to me was that these coolers were placed in railroad passenger cars and filled with ice. As the trip progressed the ice would begin to melt and provide the passengers with ice cold water. With the pottery oval, we know that your piece was manufactured between 1936 & 1947. Now without the spigot hole, your stacked 5 gallon crocks may have produced for other means. I have never seen any written documentation on these molded crocks only theories on what they were used for. In mint condition the value will range between $250 & $350 depending on the size of the crocks used. I am currently working on one such as yours in a 8 gallon size. Hope this helps. Al Kohlman
