Question:
I recently came across a red wing product burried in a vaulted sidewalk in chicago. I have no idea how long it was there, but this is a very old section of Chicago. It is a white-ish stoneware jug with a loop for a handle that starts at the opening and has a slight curl to it where it connects to the jug. It has the red wings on it with the #5 above that. Under the wings there is a blue oval stamp/marking that says Red Wing (kind of like a company stamp. It does not look like the jugs on your website. The top is rounded but it has a lip/edge a quarter of the way down from the top. For being burried it is in good condition. there are no cracks and the bottom has a little chip in it. The coloring of all the stamps are still pretty vibrant. I am interested in knowing how old it is and what they are worth. Thank you
Answer: Your description of the 5 gallon Red Wing jug was perfect. You have a 5 gallon Red wing shoulder jug. These jugs are quite common and were manufactured by the Red Wing Stoneware Company from 1918 to 1947. Value on these jugs range from $50 to $75 in today’s market. Al Kohlman
