Question:
Hello, I have what I believe is a Red Wing jug that was given to me by a relative to sell for him. I know nothing about Red Wing, so I wanted to find out as much information as possible to create an accurate listing of the jug. This jug measures about 12" high, and is a little over 9" in diameter on the bottom. There is advertising on the side for Welz Mangler Co, of St. Paul Minn, which was a fine whiskey company. I see no other markings on the jug to verify that it is a Red Wing piece, but I believe that it is. To me, the condition looks wonderful. There is a very small chip in the glaze on the top portion of the jug. There is a handle on the jug, which can’t really be seen in the photo I’m sending, but if you would like additional photos, I would be happy to send them. Any information you could give me; age, value, scarcity, etc., would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Answer: From what I can see, your jug looks like a Minnesota Stoneware common jug. The small chip (yes even a small chip) will hurt it’s value as collectors really like clean pieces. I do not collect many advertising pieces, and therefore cannot tell you how scarce your advertising is. By placing it on EBay, the Red Wing Stoneware advertising collectors will let you know how scarce it is when the auction ends as they will find it and bid accordingly. Value will range anywhere from $250 to $500 depending on scarce of advertising, collectors from the St. Paul area and condition. Just be sure to send photos of the top, sizes, back of handle and any flaws. Nice piece! Al Kohlman
