Question:
Someone told me that Red Wing pottery doesn’t necessarily have to have the red wing logo or name on it. Could you please clarify? Also wonder if you can tell me who made this piece? It is 19 1/2 inches tall, the wooden paddle part is 34 inches tall. The mouth of the churn is 8 inches across. The fattest part of the churn is approx 10 inches across. A couple small places has the blue part worn off and you can see the pottery underneath. The bottom has initials but if you look really careful you can see what appears to be an 8 and looks like at one time there was a name there. Does the big 6 on the top mean it is a 6 gallon? Thank you very much. KB

Answer: KB, there are many Red Wing Stoneware pieces that do not have the red wing logo on them. Most of them are the smaller pieces such as vinegar jugs, butter crocks, one gallon crocks to name a few. These were large production items with little value. So to take the time to place a red wing on them just was not cost effective. Also, some items such as beater jars, chicken waters etc. had the Red Wing name on them, but no wing. These items were small enough that by placing the name on the item and stating what it was just left no room for a red wing logo. Hope this helps. Now your blue churn…….I don’t know who the maker may have been. It is a nice looking piece with the blue cobalt and could be a mid-western piece, but could be eastern as well. Just have no idea.
