Question:
I just inherited this piece and am wondering if it really is Red Wing. It seems to have the appropriate markings on the front, but there is nothing denoting a date under the handle and I can’t see any visible marks on the bottom (it is discolored on the bottom. Also, is this an original lid? If Red Wing, what was this piece used for? It is in good shape, just having one chip on the glaze on the side, less than 1/2" in diameter. Can you also tell me an approximate value? Thanks. Colleen
Answer: Colleen, you inherited a little gem. Your gem is a Red Wing Bailed Packing Jar. These bailed packing jars were produced in the 3 & 5 gallon size. They were used to store vegetables and were manufactured in the late 1920′s and into the 1930′s.. The lid is orginal. The chip could hurt it’s value some depending on how deep. In mint condition (and there are collectors looking for these beauties) $650 to $700. Yours has great markings & color. Great piece! Al Kohlman
