Question:
Just before Christmas, we attended a local auction which had several pieces of stoneware listed. Most of it was generic "stuff" but a three gallon salt-glaze piece with a drop eight caught our attention and our final bid. Although unmarked, I do think it is a "Red Wing" piece. The two gallon it is pictured next to is a bottom marked Minnesota Stoneware. I don’t know a lot about salt-glaze, but to my untrained eye, the glaze and the cobalt of both crocks are the same. The handles look "right"…will send a picture of one in a separate post since I can only post one pic. now. What do you think?

Answer: Your 3 gallon salt glaze crock is a nice one. However, I do not believe it is Red Wing. The rim of the crock looks to narrow and the 3 is the same style that I have seen on a few Ohio pieces. Looking at the handle (in your other photo) it looks like Red Wing handles. This could be the case of when potters moved around the mid-west and worked at different potteries. Some of there traits moved with them. Al Kohlman
