Question:
I bought this unmarked stoneware crock at an estate sale, along with several pieces of marked Red Wing items. In trying to research this piece, I read that most of the early salt-glazed Red Wing crocks weren’t marked. With the obvious exception of design and size, my crock looks very similar in color and style to the 3 gallon crock on page 19 of Warman’s Red Wing Pottery Identification and Price Guide published in 2005. Would you please tell me if you think this is in fact Red Wing?
Answer: Your 5 gallon salt glaze crock is not Red Wing. The decoration, #5, handles and clay is all wrong. I would guess it to be Ohio or some other mid-western pottery that manufactured it. Al Kohlman
