Question:
I was going to bid on a crock from an auction, I went to view the item, I was able to fill the ink on the crock, it was a 2 gallon crock with the lazy 8 marking, I have never had any thing but the birch leaf and the wing crocks, I felt if I can fell the ink like it is raised, that it may not be red wing, did I pass up a real red wing.
Answer: The 2 gallon crock you are describing sounds like a salt glazed piece. I could have very well been a Red Wing 2 gallon lazy 8 salt glazed crock. However, other Midwest potteries made them as well. Without a photo of this crock, I just cannot tell you if you missed a deal or not. Sorry. Al Kohlman
